Laser Hair Removal FAQs
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
This is a common concern that many clients have before they begin their laser hair removal journey. More traditional laser hair removal methods might have been a tad uncomfortable, but the Moveo handpiece offers our clients a virtually pain-free solution. We recommend this handpiece for two sessions, before moving to the zappier standard laser. We use ice packs and cool gel to cool the areas making it easily tolerable.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Using the Moveo handpiece attached to our Motus AY, we deliver concentrated bursts of laser energy to the hair follicles in the treatment area. The hair follicles which are in their active growth stage absorb this energy as heat which travels down the pigment of the hair to the follicle which is the target. The heat damages the follicle and decreases the follicle’s ability to grow back. After multiple treatments, some follicles can be rendered dormant.
What Does Laser Hair Removal Feel Like?
Traditionally laser hair removal feels like the snap of an elastic band against the skin, sounds a little unpleasant doesn’t it?
The Motus AY uses a sapphire cooling tip to soothe the surface of the skin during treatment to help protect against any uncomfortable sensations, burns, and pigmentation changes. The system uses different wavelengths to gradually heat up the skin to a temperature that damages the hair follicles to reduce and eliminate hair regrowth without harming the surrounding tissue.
EFFECTIVE: Traditional methods of laser hair removal deliver laser energy in one quick zap. The Moveo handpiece repeatedly passes over small areas causing gradual heating of viable hair follicles. This distributes the energy evenly, more effectively, and at peak efficiency, doubling the energy transfer in comparison with standard laser systems. Moveo is the only technology in the world that allows a 755nm Alexandrite laser to be safely applied to all skin types. Darker skins have traditionally been restricted to less effective wavelengths such as Diode or Nd:YAG however now can be treated with Alexandrite – the gold standard laser for hair removal. The Motus also utilises Nd:YAG laser for vascular and pigmented lesions and skin rejuvenation.
FAST: Moveo enables faster treatment times through the frequency of the laser and the 20mm large tip size.
SAFE: The Motus AY is safe for all skin types. The utilisation of gradual heating and the contact cooling system integrated into the handpiece guarantees maximum patient comfort.
PAIN-FREE: Pain-free and truly effective laser hair removal for all skin types.
How Many Treatments Does It Take?
We recommend booking a minimum of 6 sessions to secure long-lasting hair reduction and effective results. Your body hair goes through a resting and growth cycle, the treatment is only effective on hairs that are in their growth stage, and not all the hairs in your treatment area will be growing at the same time. To achieve the best results consult with your practitioner as you go.
How soon after my test patch can I start laser hair removal treatment?
We recommend 5-7 days.
I have a mixture of hair colour, including some white hair, will laser hair removal be effective for me?
In short, NO. Laser hair removal is generally most effective on individuals with darker hair and lighter skin because the laser targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles. The contrast between dark hair and light skin allows the laser to more effectively heat and damage the hair follicles, inhibiting future hair growth.
However, laser hair removal may not be as effective on light-coloured hair, such as white or gray hair, as the laser energy may not be absorbed well by the lighter pigments. White or gray hair lacks the melanin that the laser targets.
How do I remove my hair in between treatments if I need to?
You need to shave in between treatments and for 4 weeks before treatment. You cannot wax, pluck, or use hair removal cream.
Should I Do Anything To My Hair Before I Have Laser Hair Removal Treatment?
We will ask you to shave before your treatment.
Is laser hair removal suitable for transgender patients?
Yes, laser hair removal can be a suitable and popular option for transgender individuals who are seeking permanent hair reduction or removal. We offer packages of all areas, including the whole body.
I can’t commit to having treatment at the suggested frequency. Will this make a difference to my results?
The frequency of laser hair removal sessions is an important factor in achieving optimal and long-lasting results. While individual responses to treatment can vary, adherence to the recommended treatment schedule is generally crucial for the success of the procedure. If you are unable to commit to the suggested frequency, it may impact the effectiveness of the treatment.
Here are some reasons why adherence to the recommended schedule is important:
- Hair Growth Cycle: Laser hair removal is most effective when targeting hair follicles during the active growth phase (anagen). Since not all hair follicles are in this phase simultaneously, multiple sessions are necessary to catch all follicles in the growth stage.
- Consistency is Key: Consistency in attending scheduled sessions helps ensure that all targeted follicles receive adequate exposure to the laser energy. Gaps between sessions may result in missed opportunities to treat actively growing hair.
- Achieving Permanent Reduction: Laser hair removal provides permanent hair reduction, but it may not eliminate all hair permanently. Multiple sessions are needed to significantly reduce hair growth.
- Addressing Different Hair Growth Cycles: Some areas of the body may have different hair growth cycles, and adherence to the recommended frequency allows the laser to target hairs at various stages of growth.
If you are unable to commit to the suggested treatment frequency, it’s important to communicate this with your laser hair removal practitioner. They can work with you to adjust the treatment plan based on your availability and discuss realistic expectations. While you may still see some reduction in hair growth with fewer sessions, optimal and long-lasting results are more likely with consistent adherence to the recommended treatment schedule.
Can Laser hair removal help with in-growing hairs?
Yes, laser hair removal can be an effective solution for ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs occur when hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin, leading to inflammation, redness, and sometimes infection. Laser hair removal works by targeting and destroying the hair follicles, which can help prevent future hair growth and reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs.
Here’s how laser hair removal can help with ingrown hairs:
- Permanent Reduction of Hair: Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction by targeting the hair follicles and preventing them from producing new hair. With fewer hairs, there is a reduced likelihood of ingrown hairs.
- Reduction in Hair Thickness: Laser treatments can lead to a significant reduction in hair thickness, making it less likely for hairs to become trapped under the skin’s surface.
- Smoothing of Skin Texture: By minimising hair growth, laser hair removal can contribute to smoother skin texture, reducing the friction and irritation that can lead to ingrown hairs.
- Prevention of Folliculitis: Folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles, can contribute to ingrown hairs. Laser hair removal can help prevent folliculitis by reducing the number of active hair follicles.
