If you’re considering laser hair removal in Penryn, Falmouth or Truro, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: will this actually last, or will the hair just grow back? Here’s an honest answer, based on how the treatment actually works.

How “permanent” laser hair removal really is

Laser hair removal is classed as a permanent hair reduction treatment, rather than permanent hair removal in the absolute sense. The laser targets hair follicles that are actively growing at the time of treatment, damaging them so they stop producing hair or produce much finer, sparser hair going forward. Because body hair grows in cycles, and only a portion of your follicles are in the active growth phase at any one time, a course of sessions is needed to catch as many follicles as possible.

At MOR Clinic we recommend a minimum of six sessions using our Motus AY laser to secure long-lasting reduction. Most clients see a dramatic, lasting reduction in hair growth after completing a full course, and many follicles are rendered permanently dormant.

Why some hair can return

Hair regrowth after a full course is usually much finer, lighter and slower-growing than before, but hormonal changes can sometimes stimulate dormant follicles back into activity. Conditions that affect hormone levels or thyroid function, for example, can occasionally influence hair growth patterns, so it’s always worth mentioning any relevant medical history at your consultation so your practitioner can set realistic expectations for you specifically.

Occasional top-up sessions, perhaps once or twice a year, are common even for clients with excellent results, simply to catch any follicles that have reactivated.

What about ingrown hairs or folliculitis?

It’s worth distinguishing between hair regrowth and folliculitis, which is inflammation or infection of the hair follicle, often caused by shaving, waxing or ingrown hairs rather than by laser treatment itself. Many clients actually find laser hair removal reduces ingrown hairs over time, since there’s less need for shaving. If you have active folliculitis or a skin infection, let your practitioner know before treatment, as they may recommend waiting until it has settled.

Getting the best long-term results

The best results come from completing your full recommended course of sessions, spaced correctly to catch hairs in their growth phase, and attending any suggested top-ups. Every client’s hair, skin and hormones are a little different, which is why we assess you individually during your consultation in Penryn rather than offering a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.
